Ann Siang & Club Street
The classic bar street, re-formed upward — rooftops and bars above the old shopfronts.
Ann Siang Hill and Club Street were the city’s original bar street, and for a stretch of years the ground floor was the whole story — one shopfront after another, doors open to the pavement. That version thinned out. What is left has moved upward: rooftop terraces above the old facades, a bar on the second storey with its own separate entrance, a bar that only reveals itself once you’re already up the stairs.
What the district is now
The street-level energy is quieter than it once was, but the hill itself is denser than it looks — narrow staircases lead to terraces with skyline views, and shophouse upper floors hold bars built for exactly the crowd who used to fill the street below. It rewards looking up, not just walking through.
How a Nightporter night moves through it
We open on a terrace while the light is still going, then work upward and inward — a rooftop for the view, a tucked-away bar for the middle of the night, somewhere with a later pour to close. The staircases and unmarked doors are the reason to bring someone who already knows which ones lead anywhere, with a car waiting at street level between stops.
