Dempsey & Tanglin
Leafy former barracks turned upscale enclave — discreet wine bars among the black-and-whites.
Dempsey and Tanglin occupy the old colonial barracks and black-and-white bungalows on the green edge of the city, and the bars that have moved into them carry that setting through — high ceilings, verandahs, a canopy of rain trees instead of a skyline. It is the most discreet of Singapore’s drinking districts by design: spread out, low-key from the road, built for people who already know where they’re going.
What the district is now
Nothing here is stacked on top of anything else. Each building holds a single restaurant or bar, set back from the road behind its own garden, so the district reads less as a strip and more as a series of private addresses. Wine bars and quiet spots sit among them, favouring a long unhurried evening over a loud one.
How a Nightporter night moves through it
Distance and darkness do the work that a crowded strip does elsewhere — nothing here is walkable between stops, so a chauffeured limousine isn’t a convenience, it’s the only sensible way through. We build shorter, calmer routes: a wine bar to open, a quieter garden bar to hold the middle of the night, timed so no one is standing on an unlit road looking for the next address.
