Joo Chiat and Katong sit apart from the rest of Singapore’s drinking map, both in geography and in temperament. The shophouses here are Peranakan — coloured tile facades, carved shutters, a heritage streetscape that has been left largely alone — and the bars that have settled into them take their cue from the neighbourhood: unhurried, personal, built for people who live nearby rather than for a crowd passing through.
What the district is now
This is a residential district first, a drinking one second, and that ordering shows in every bar. A cocktail den might seat twenty on a good night. Bartenders know regulars by name. There is no strip to speak of — just a scatter of shophouses, each worth a special trip rather than a passing stop, spread along streets that still feel like a neighbourhood.
How a Nightporter night moves through it
Because the district rewards patience rather than pace, we build slower nights here — two or three bars rather than five, more time in each, a chauffeured limousine that means the distance from the city centre is no obstacle at all. It suits an evening that starts later and lingers, rather than one built for momentum.
Who it suits
Joo Chiat and Katong suit a smaller, closer group — an anniversary, an intimate catch-up, visitors who want to see the Singapore that exists away from downtown. It is the district we recommend when the point of the night is the conversation, not the crowd.
